CURRENT PROGAMMES Social Watch Programme The Social Watch Programme was initiated by members of SAHRiNGON-Tanzania Chapter in 1998 to respond by actions to the need arose during the Copenhagen World Summit and Declaration for Social Development of 1995 where it was agreed that Non State Actors should ensure implementation of their governments’ commitments under the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development through monitoring, reporting and advocacy. The Social Watch activities have gone hand in hand with the Declaration developments now covering the Beijing Platform of action, Millennium Development Goals and in Tanzania the National Strategy for growth and reduction of poverty. The Tanzania Social Watchers monitor, document, report and advocate for effective implementation of government commitments for poverty reduction and social development since 1998. This is due to the fact that the delivery of the social services by the Government to its people is still low hence a need to advocate for immediate and more improved strategies and actions to meet development goals agreed during the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development, Beijing Platform of action of 1995, the Millennium UN Summit of 2000 and as mainstreamed under the National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP) commonly known as MKUKUTA. Refugee Protection Programme This Programme is one of the Strengthening Protection Capacity Project initiated by UNHCR Geneva as part of the implementation of one of the Goals of the Agenda for Protection namely to enhance the capacity of States to host refugees through multilateral international cooperation. The Project was rolled out on a pilot basis in 2004 in Benin, Burkina Faso, Kenya and Tanzania. The main funders of the project are the European Commission and the Governments of Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdoms. SAHRiNGON-Tanzania Chapter since July 2006 conducts a countrywide campaigns to build better relations between the refugees and the local community as a means of ensuring effective refugees protection. We mobilize SAHRiNGON members and other like minded organizations across the country to conduct a national wide awareness raising campaign through information gathering and sharing through various methods including roundtable discussions, provision of education, training, awareness raising, TV and Radio Programmes, Peaceful match, monitoring and advocacy. Human Rights treaty body reporting. Tanzania has ratified a number of regional and international human rights treaties with monitoring bodies. The Country Secretariat of SAHRiNGON-Tanzania Chapter mobilizes its members to take action for reminding the government on its implementation and reporting obligations under the treaties. Among the action taken including preparation and submission of: Shadow Reports, Communications to the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights and urgent Appeals for the protection of human rights defenders International Criminal Court Tanzania ratified the Rome Statute on International Criminal Court on 2 August 2002 and signed the Agreement on Privileges and Immunities of the Court on 27 January 2004 but has not yet enacted a new legislation or amended her legislation for harmonisation with the Rome Statute and related instruments.
